Ibogaine for Alcohol Addiction

Medically Supervised Care for Lasting Alcohol Recovery

At Bassé, we offer medically supervised Ibogaine treatment for people who have cycled through detox programs, therapy, or rehab without lasting relief from alcohol addiction. Our program treats alcohol dependence as the medical and neurological condition it is, with safety protocols built specifically for it.

Ibogaine for Alcohol Addiction: A Different Way Out of the Cycle

Alcohol dependence is not a failure of willpower. It is the result of long-term changes in brain chemistry: chronic drinking alters the dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin systems that regulate mood, stress, and reward, until the nervous system depends on alcohol just to function. This is why many people keep drinking long after it stopped being pleasurable, and why detox alone so rarely holds.

If you’ve been through rehab, therapy, or repeated attempts to quit and found yourself back where you started, the problem isn’t you. It’s that most approaches never touch the neurological drivers underneath. This is where Ibogaine works differently:

Interrupting the craving loop. Ibogaine interacts with multiple neurotransmitter systems involved in alcohol dependence, including the dopamine pathways behind craving and reward, NMDA receptors involved in compulsive behavior, and serotonin systems linked to mood. For many clients, alcohol cravings after treatment are dramatically reduced or absent for a time, a window most have not experienced in years.

Opening a window of neuroplasticity. Chronic alcohol use makes the brain rigid: stress tolerance drops, emotional responses narrow, relapse triggers become automatic. Ibogaine promotes neuroplasticity, the brain’s capacity to form new connections, creating a biological window in which new coping strategies and habits actually take hold.

Healing what the drinking was covering. Alcohol is usually a coping mechanism for something older: trauma, anxiety, grief, pain. During treatment, Ibogaine induces a dreamlike life review in which clients revisit formative experiences with unusual emotional distance. Processing what sits underneath the drinking is the difference between white-knuckling sobriety and no longer needing the drink. If trauma or anxiety are central to your story, those are conditions we treat in the same course of care.

An Honest Word About Alcohol Withdrawal

Alcohol withdrawal is uniquely dangerous. Abrupt cessation after prolonged heavy drinking can cause seizures, delirium tremens, and life-threatening cardiac instability, which is why quitting cold turkey on your own is never the answer.

It is also why we will tell you something some clinics won’t: Ibogaine is never administered to someone in active alcohol withdrawal. Clients must be medically stabilized first. Our intake team will review your drinking pattern honestly and tell you exactly what stabilization looks like for your situation, before you ever travel. That sequencing is not a limitation of our program; it is what makes treatment safe, and any program that skips it should be avoided.

Alcohol-Specific Medical Screening

Alcohol places unique strain on the liver, heart, and nervous system, so our screening protocol goes deeper for alcohol clients:

  • Liver enzyme panels (AST, ALT, bilirubin) and assessment for alcohol-related liver disease

  • Cardiac evaluation and EKG, since Ibogaine requires a stable heart rhythm

  • Electrolyte balance and nutritional status, which heavy drinking commonly depletes

  • Review of seizure history and past withdrawal complications

A common and fair question: will Ibogaine hurt my already-taxed liver? Ibogaine is metabolized by the liver, so liver function must be carefully evaluated, and advanced liver disease is an absolute contraindication. For appropriately screened candidates, dosing and monitoring are adjusted to minimize hepatic stress. A responsible program must be willing to delay or decline treatment when the medical risk is too high, and we are.

Clinical Safety & Medical Oversight

Continuous Clinical Supervision

Our team of ACLS-certified doctors and nurses is on site 24/7. During your Ibogaine experience you are on continuous cardiac telemetry with vital-sign monitoring throughout, which matters doubly for alcohol clients, who can carry underlying cardiac and autonomic strain from years of drinking.

Emergency Readiness

Our center is equipped with advanced medical technology, including resuscitation equipment, and we are 20 minutes from a hospital in the case of an emergency.

Daily Medical Rhythm

Clients are monitored from arrival to departure: daily EKGs, blood work review, and physician assessments, not just on treatment day.

“I was immediately confident with the safety aspects of it because I was asked to wear a heart rate monitor. They wanted blood work. They wanted a list of my medications… I went into the treatment on an EKG, with the heart rate monitor, with the blood pressure, everything.”

What to Expect During Treatment

Pre-treatment. Once you arrive at our center, we conduct a comprehensive medical assessment: electrocardiograms, vital sign checks, and blood chemistry panels. Our team reviews this data and tailors a treatment plan so you can safely enter Ibogaine therapy. You’ll also meet with a psychologist and receive oral and IV supplementation to restore the electrolytes and nutrients that heavy drinking depletes.

Your Ibogaine journey. On treatment day, the effects unfold over 12 to 24 hours, often beginning with dreamlike visions before moving into deep emotional processing and mental clarity. You’ll be medically monitored, emotionally supported, and physically nourished throughout, then enter a 24 to 48 hour recovery phase.

Integration begins. Once out of the acute experience, we support you in processing your journey through integration classes and therapeutic bodywork. On your final full day, we introduce our 30-day aftercare program and connect you with your practitioner on next steps.

Integration & Staying Sober

Ibogaine provides the reset; integration builds the life that keeps it. After treatment, the brain enters a period of heightened neuroplasticity, and this is when new routines, emotional regulation skills, and support structures take root fastest.

As part of your treatment, you’ll gain access to our 30-day integration program designed by Kat Courtney, a pioneer in the field of psychedelic integration, with somatic and neuro-supportive practices for exactly this window. You may also book optional 1:1 coaching sessions with our integration practitioners to stay accountable, manage triggers, and keep translating the insights of your journey into daily life.

Bassé Success Stories

“I arrived carrying years of alcohol addiction, anxiety, fear, and patterns that had shaped my life for decades… Since then, I have celebrated one year of sobriety after more than 25 years of alcohol addiction. My nervous system is calmer, I live with greater gratitude and self-compassion, and I finally feel like I am living as my authentic self.”

FAQs

Does Ibogaine work for alcohol addiction?

Ibogaine addresses alcohol dependence at the neurological level: it interrupts the dopamine-driven craving loop, acts on the NMDA receptors involved in compulsive behavior, and opens a window of neuroplasticity in which new patterns form more easily. Clients typically report dramatically reduced cravings after treatment. Combined with integration work, that window is where lasting recovery gets built.

Do I need to stop drinking before I arrive?

You must be past the danger zone of acute withdrawal before Ibogaine can be administered, because alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening and Ibogaine is never given during it. Do not attempt to quit abruptly on your own. During intake, our medical team will review your situation and give you an exact, safe plan for the days and weeks before treatment.

Is Ibogaine safe if my liver is damaged from drinking?

It depends on the degree. Ibogaine is metabolized by the liver, so we require liver enzyme panels before treatment. Mild, stable elevations can often be worked with through adjusted dosing and monitoring; advanced liver disease is an absolute contraindication. Screening exists precisely to answer this question honestly for your body.

How is this different from rehab?

Traditional rehab works on behavior: group therapy, abstinence frameworks, willpower. Those tools matter, but they often leave the neurochemical drivers of addiction untouched, which is why so many people relapse after leaving. Ibogaine addresses the neurological foundation first, so that the behavioral and emotional work finally has ground to stand on.
