What Is Ibogaine?

Ibogaine is a psychoactive compound derived from the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub native to Central West Africa that has long been used in traditional ceremonies.

How it became a treatment
Ibogaine’s power to disrupt addiction was discovered by accident in 1962, when a young heroin user named Howard Lotsof took it and found his withdrawal gone. Since then, the medicine has moved from ceremony into medically supervised clinics.
What it is used for
In clinical settings, it is used as a neurological intervention for opioid addiction, alcohol dependence, PTSD, trauma, and treatment-resistant depression; conditions that have often resisted every conventional approach tried before it.
How it works
What makes ibogaine pharmacologically distinct is the breadth of its action. It modulates opioid receptors in a way that can interrupt acute withdrawal rapidly, while simultaneously promoting neuroplasticity; the brain’s capacity to form new neural connections and break entrenched patterns.
How it is given
Ibogaine is typically given as one flood dose treatment, in a single medically supervised session, with possible booster doses afterwards as determined by the medical staff. The first effects arrive within 30 to 45 minutes, and for people in withdrawal, that is usually when the discomfort begins to fade. The full experience then unfolds over 12 to 24 hours.
What it is like
With Ibogaine, our usual defenses fall away. We see the causes of our suffering, the cycles we’ve been stuck in, and the wounds that shaped our lives. Many who come to Ibogaine feel an incredible sense of clarity and relief, not because the pain vanishes, but because we see it with new eyes.
What the research shows
The research is incredibly promising. A 2021 systematic review of the clinical trials to date reported reduced withdrawal symptoms and craving in substance use disorders. The strongest single number comes from a 2018 study of problematic opioid use, where 80% of participants said their withdrawal was eliminated or drastically reduced. Read the studies in full on our Ibogaine page.

Ibogaine is not a cure or a magic pill. It is a window of opportunity. If you are willing to do the work, this process can truly be life changing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ibogaine?

Ibogaine is a naturally occurring compound derived from the root bark of the African Iboga shrub (Tabernanthe iboga), traditionally used in ritualistic contexts by indigenous peoples for its psychoactive properties. As a powerful psychedelic, Ibogaine is primarily recognized for its potential therapeutic effects in treating substance use disorders, particularly opioid addiction. Ibogaine is also a powerful remedy for PTSD and trauma-related symptoms, as well as chronic pain and various neurological conditions. It interacts with multiple neurotransmitter systems, promoting a profound introspective experience, which can lead to insights and physical and emotional healing.

Is Ibogaine psychedelic?

Ibogaine provides a profoundly powerful psychotropic experience that many individuals find to be remarkably insightful and expansive. Participants often describe the Ibogaine journey as akin to a vivid dream or a life review, where they reflect on pivotal moments in their lives as if watching a movie unfold with their eyes closed. This experience can bring to the surface trapped emotions and memories, allowing for safe exploration and processing of these events. Although the process can be challenging, most clients discover that the healing benefits far outweigh the effort, and many actually love the adventure!

What is the difference between Iboga and Ibogaine?

Ibogaine is used in a medical setting for treating addiction and addictive behaviors, plus PTSD and chronic pain, whereas Iboga is used in a ceremonial, shamanic setting. While Ibogaine is derived from Iboga, the experiences are quite different. When you take Ibogaine, your liver converts it to the active metabolite Noribogaine, which is what is responsible for eliminating the cravings and desires to use afterwards. Noribogaine also produces an amazing antidepressant and anti-anxiety effect. Ibogaine is one of 12 alkaloids found in Iboga, so in order to get the full saturation of Noribogaine, you want to take Ibogaine HCL, as Iboga does not provide enough concentration of Ibogaine to deliver the clinical benefits. At Bassé clinic, we use 99.7% pure pharmaceutical grade Ibogaine HCL, that has been lab tested and verified for our center.

What medical issues does Bassé Ibogaine Clinic treat?

At Bassé, we specialize in Ibogaine therapy for people dealing with substance abuse disorders (including all opiates, kratom and 7-OH, alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, and prescription stimulants), PTSD and trauma-related symptoms, depression, anxiety, TBI, and chronic pain. Reach out to one of our compassionate and trusted team members and we will assess if you are a candidate for our Ibogaine programs.

There are moments in life that divide your life into before and after.

Bassé was one of those moments for me. I arrived carrying years of alcohol addiction, anxiety, fear, and patterns that had shaped my life for decades. The medicine met me exactly where I was, but what made Bassé extraordinary was the people. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely safe, held, and supported. Every detail was intentional—the medical expertise, the science, the ceremonies, the integration, the conversations, and the genuine compassion of the entire team. I left Mexico lighter, calmer, and more connected to myself than I have been in decades. Since then, I have celebrated one year of sobriety after more than 25 years of alcohol addiction. My nervous system is calmer, I live with greater gratitude and self-compassion, and I finally feel like I am living as my authentic self. Bassé didn’t just help me heal. They helped me reclaim my life. Forever grateful. Maria Ruiz

My stay at Basse has been an incredibly helpful experience. After suffering a severe TBI at age 18 decades ago I had lost most of my childhood memories.

I had tried multiple modalities over the years to try to recover my memories but was not successful. I did extensive research on which clinic to choose since Ibogaine has cardiac risks. I am so glad I chose Basse. The expertise, thoroughness and kindness of the medical doctors is outstanding. The fact that they often eat meals with clients is wonderful and comforting. The therapists Amanda and Kat are fantastic. Those two ladies really see and hear you, are so compassionate and skilled to help you work through integration. The setting is beautiful, personal and intimate. My Ibogaine journey showed me in a compassionate way the most significant events of my childhood. I felt very safe and well supported during my journey. The nurses stay with you the whole time watching your heart monitor and attending to any need that may arise. I am filled with gratitude for the clarity and insight I gained and highly recommend Basse.

I recently returned from Basse Ibogaine. I was addicted to opiates and had severe PTSD from earlier life trauma.

I arrived to a very clean and welcoming “retreat” where the entire staff provided support and encouragement as I began my Ibogaine journey. Dr. Cano, MD was wonderful and guided me through the medical portion of my treatment. I felt safe and cared for during my stay. Additionally, Diana, registered nurse was present during the treatment. I must say the location and amenities were first rate- the food was delicious and tailored to individual dietary needs. Amanda - the Somatic Coach was available to assist me in processing the experience. Prior to treatment I was throughly vetted to determine if I was a suitable candidate for Ibogaine and found the intake process to be informative and supportive of my needs. After 10 years of opiate addiction, I am now clean and opiate free for the first time in years. I highly recommend Basse!

I honestly can't say enough good things about my experience at Bassé Clinic.

From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, cared for, and genuinely safe. The entire team was incredibly kind and attentive, and it was clear that everyone truly cares about the people who come through their doors. The level of professionalism gave me a lot of confidence. Every step of the process was explained clearly, and I always felt like I was in capable hands. At the same time, the atmosphere was warm and supportive, which made a huge difference during such a vulnerable experience. What stood out to me the most was how personalized the care felt. I never felt like just another client. If you're considering ibogaine treatment and looking for a place that prioritizes both safety and genuine compassion, I would absolutely recommend Bassé Clinic.

My experience at Bassé was genuinely transformative. I arrived carrying emotional weight and patterns I couldn’t break on my own, even after trying multiple approaches.

The team made me feel safe, respected, and truly cared for, and the medical staff is really exceptional. They explained every step of the process with clarity, checked on me constantly, and made sure I felt supported the entire time. My ibogaine journey gave me a level of clarity and release that I had been hoping for but didn’t know was possible. Everyone’s path is different, but if someone is considering ibogaine treatment, I truly believe Basse is the best place to do it.
