Ibogaine for Anxiety: What the Research and Clinical Experience Suggest
Living with chronic anxiety means living in a body that will not stand down. The racing thoughts, the tight chest, the sense that something is always about to go wrong. Perhaps you’ve tried medication and therapy, and found that they blunt the edges without ever turning the alarm off.
Chronic anxiety is not just a psychological state. It reflects real changes in the brain and nervous system, a survival response that has become stuck in the “on” position. Effective treatment has to reach that level, and this is where Ibogaine can help.
Disrupting overactive fear circuits. Anxiety embeds itself in the brain through rigid, over-sensitized pathways driven by the glutamate system, the brain’s primary excitatory network. Ibogaine acts on NMDA receptors within that system, temporarily interrupting the circuits that keep worry and fear conditioning running on a loop. Many clients describe the result as the first true quiet they have felt in years.
Rebalancing mood chemistry. Ibogaine acts on the serotonin and dopamine systems involved in mood, motivation, and threat perception. Its active metabolite, noribogaine, remains in the body for weeks after treatment and produces a marked anti-anxiety and antidepressant effect during that period.
Opening a window of neuroplasticity. Ibogaine is shown to elicit a state of neuroplasticity, increasing the brain’s capacity to form new connections. Anxious pathways that took years to wear in become temporarily changeable, which is exactly when therapeutic work, new habits, and nervous-system practices take hold fastest.
Processing what sits underneath. For many people, chronic anxiety grows from unprocessed trauma. During treatment, Ibogaine induces a dreamlike life review in which clients often revisit formative experiences with unusual emotional distance and clarity. Processing those memories without the accompanying panic lets the nervous system finally re-file them as past rather than present danger. If trauma is central to your story, see our dedicated page on Ibogaine therapy for trauma and PTSD.
Anxiety also rarely travels alone. It intertwines with depression, substance use, and post-traumatic stress, and because Ibogaine works at the level of the underlying systems rather than a single diagnosis, many clients find relief across all of them in a single course of treatment.
How Is This Different From Anti-Anxiety Medication?
Benzodiazepines like Xanax and Klonopin quiet anxiety by amplifying GABA, the brain’s braking system, for a few hours at a time. The relief is real but temporary, tolerance builds, and long-term use creates its own dependence.
Ibogaine works differently. It does not act on GABA-A receptors the way benzodiazepines do, and it is not a daily medication. It is a single, medically supervised intervention aimed at resetting the systems that generate anxiety in the first place, followed by an integration period in which the reset is turned into lasting change.
One important, honest note: if you currently take SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs, these must be safely tapered under medical supervision before Ibogaine treatment. This is a hard safety requirement, and our intake team will walk you through exactly what it means for your situation. Benzodiazepines are different: they do not interfere with Ibogaine, so you can arrive taking them. If you do, you’ll stay stabilized on your prescribed dose throughout your stay. And if benzodiazepine dependence itself is your primary struggle, please read our direct answer on why Ibogaine does not treat benzo addiction.
Clinical Safety & Medical Oversight
At Bassé, our number one priority is your safety. That’s why we’ve built a world-class team of clinicians and rigorous medical protocols for everyone who comes to our clinic for Ibogaine treatment.
Comprehensive Medical Screening
Every single client undergoes daily EKGs, a liver panel test, a full blood workup, and a psychiatric evaluation before receiving Ibogaine. This helps us rule out potentially dangerous health issues and ensure you are physically and psychologically ready for treatment.
Continuous Clinical Supervision
Our team of ACLS-certified doctors and nurses is on site 24/7, with continuous monitoring throughout the entire treatment and your entire stay.
Emergency Readiness
Our center is equipped with advanced medical technology, including resuscitation equipment, and we are 20 minutes from a hospital in the case of an emergency.
Mental Health Collaboration
Our clinicians and coaches are experienced in supporting people with anxiety and mood disorders. We are trauma-informed, and we understand that walking into an unfamiliar treatment experience is itself an act of courage for an anxious nervous system. Every step is explained, predictable, and paced with that in mind.
What to Expect During Treatment
Here’s what an eight-day treatment protocol at Bassé looks like.
Pre-treatment. Once you arrive at our center, we conduct a comprehensive medical assessment, including electrocardiograms, vital sign checks, and blood chemistry panels. Our team reviews this data and tailors a treatment plan so you can safely enter Ibogaine therapy. You’ll also meet with a somatic therapist to ensure mental and emotional readiness, and receive oral and IV supplementation to balance electrolyte levels.
Your Ibogaine journey. On day four, your Ibogaine journey unfolds. The effects can last between 12 and 24 hours, often starting with dreamlike visions and then moving into a phase of deep emotional processing and mental clarity. You’ll be medically monitored, emotionally supported, and physically nourished as you come out of your experience and enter the recovery stage for the following 24 to 48 hours.
Integration begins. Once out of the acute experience, we support you in landing back and processing your journey through an integration class and therapeutic bodywork. Our goal is to help you recalibrate your nervous system with softness and care. On your final full day, we’ll introduce you to our 30-day aftercare program and connect you with your practitioner on next steps.
Integration & Long-Term Regulation
For anxiety in particular, integration is where the reset becomes a new way of living. Ibogaine hands you a regulated nervous system; integration teaches you how to keep it.
As part of your treatment, you’ll gain access to our 30-day integration program designed by Kat Courtney, a pioneer in the field of psychedelic integration. The program provides somatic and neuro-supportive practices, breathwork, mindfulness, and body-based regulation tools, precisely the skills that cement calm during the post-treatment window of neuroplasticity.
You may also book optional 1:1 coaching sessions with one of our integration practitioners to support continued processing of your experience and stay accountable to the calmer patterns you’re building.
Why Clients Choose Bassé
At Bassé, we are experienced in supporting people with a range of mental and physical health struggles. Anxiety often arrives interwoven with depression, trauma, addiction, or chronic pain, and we understand how these states feed each other.
Our protocols are rooted in clinical excellence and delivered by a full medical team in an intimate six-room setting. We prioritize personalized care in small groups so you feel physically and psychologically safe enough to surrender to your experience, which matters doubly when anxiety is the thing you’re here to heal.

FAQs
Does Ibogaine work for anxiety?
Ibogaine addresses anxiety at the neurological level: it disrupts overactive fear circuits through its action on NMDA receptors, rebalances serotonin and dopamine systems, and opens a window of neuroplasticity in which new, calmer patterns form more easily. Its metabolite noribogaine also produces a notable anti-anxiety effect for weeks after treatment. Clients with anxiety rooted in trauma often benefit most.
I take Xanax (or another benzodiazepine) for my anxiety. Can I still do Ibogaine?
Yes. Benzodiazepines do not interfere with Ibogaine, so you can arrive taking a low dose. Ibogaine does not treat benzodiazepine dependence itself, so rather than tapering you off beforehand, you’ll stay stabilized on your prescribed dose throughout your stay. Our intake team will review your medications honestly and tell you exactly what your path would look like.
What if I have anxiety and depression, or anxiety and PTSD?
That combination is the norm, not the exception, among our clients. Because Ibogaine works on the shared underlying systems rather than one diagnosis at a time, a single course of treatment often brings relief across anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic symptoms together.
Will the psychedelic experience make my anxiety worse?
It’s a fair fear, and the honest answer is that the experience is intense but held. You are medically monitored and personally supported the entire time, and the state Ibogaine produces is typically described as observational and calm rather than panicked, even by highly anxious clients. Our team prepares you thoroughly beforehand, and the days after are structured for gentle landing.
Begin Your Path to a Quieter Mind
